The word "narcotic" refers to a group of substances that can dull the senses, induce stupor, coma, or insensibility to pain. The word is generally used to refer to opioids, including heroin, morphine, oxycodone and methadone.

But, it is sometimes used as a more general term for all psychoactive drugs.
