Is smurfs a drug? What effects does it have?
Hey, thanks for your question.
Over the past few years there have been reports of ecstasy pills called "smurfs". These pills can be blue and branded with a picture of a smurf or be shaped like a smurf. (A smurf is an elf-like cartoon character from the 1980s.)
Ecstasy is the street name for the drug methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). It's a type of stimulant that can also produce hallucinogenic effects, such as altering a person's thinking and emotions. Stimulant drugs speed up the messages between the brain and the body, and can make a person feel more awake, alert, confident or energetic. Other effects can include:
- increased body temperature
- increased heart rate and blood pressure
- paranoia, aggression and psychosis.
It's important to understand that the effects of any drug depend on a number of things, including the person's size, weight and health, whether the person is used to taking the drug, and whether other drugs are taken at the same time.
You may also be interested to know that according to the Australian Crimes Commission, in 2008–09 a significant number of tablets that were sold as ecstasy contained no MDMA at all. In other words, you can never know what's in an ecstasy pill without testing it.
