When I get it I lose my appetite and want to sleep constantly. Is this normal?

Q.
Hi there, I get very heavy periods so I went on the pill and skipped my period for 4 years. Now I've stopped the pill and I'm getting my period, but I've noticed that when I get it I lose my appetite and want to sleep constantly. Is this normal?
A.

Hi, thanks for your question. Some women do experience quite a lot of changes during their period, and it's not unusual to feel tired, cranky and to have minor appetite changes as a result. So this is probably normal.

The period that you have while on the pill is not a true period and the mechanism is actually quite different to a normal period, so women do find them quite different to the periods they have while on the pill. However, having heavy periods ongoing may eventually lead to iron deficiency anaemia, which could indeed make you feel tired and sleepy. But it's more likely that you would feel this way all the time, not just during your period. If this is the case it would be a good idea to see your GP and talk about it and about possibly have a blood test for anaemia.

All the best and take care.
