Q.
Can injecting methamphetamines cause you to have a miscarriage and what percentage do you have of having a miscarriage using meth?
A.
The short answer is yes. Methamphetamines cross the placental barrier, meaning that the foetus absorbs the methamphetamines also. This can lead to permanent brain damage, abnormal birth weights and stunted development, particularly if used during the first trimester. Any one of these effects can cause a foetus to sponateously abort as the body senses the damage that has been inflicted and rids itself of it. Approaching birth, methamphetamine use can lead to premature labour and low birth weights.Whilst I cannot give you a percentage chance of how likely a miscarriage is, I can point out that any percentage of risk is too high. May I also strongly urge you not to introduce foreign, potentially harmful substances into your body whilst pregnant as, really, it isn't worth it. Women are only pregnant for nine months, which isn't all that long, and what happens to a mother's body during that time might have effects on the child for the rest of that child's life.
