Can you have an orgasm without having sex? My boyfriend and I have a great relationship, but are waiting until marriage to have sex.

Q.
I was wondering...can you have an orgasm without having sex? My boyfriend and I have a great relationship, but are waiting until marriage to have sex. When kissing we "straddle" each other, but we keep it to a minimum. Also, can this be harmful to either of us, emotionally or physically?
A.

When you say it is "sex" that you and your boyfriend are waiting for until marriage, do you mean sexual intercourse or all sexual contact? It is possible to have an orgasm without sexual intercourse. This can happen on your own with masturbation, or with your partner through masturbating together, masturbating each other, or oral sex.

Religion, family values, and/or personal reasons can play important parts in the decision to wait for sex. As long as you and your boyfriend are honest with each other about how you are feeling about the things you are doing, none of this should be harmful. It is common, however, for couples in your position to find themselves in the potentially "compromising position" of changing their minds. What we do know about young people is that the first time they have intercourse is often unplanned and condoms and contraception are not used, so they risk an unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
