What are the first signs of being pregnant?
Hi and thanks for your question. There are many signs of being pregnant and they can vary between women.
For most women, the first thing they notice is a missed period. You may miss the period all together or notice that your period is much lighter than it usually is. While missing a period is a really obvious sign, there can be other reasons for missing or being late with a period though, such as stress, or the effects of some contraception. Also, some pregnant women have said they still had their period for the first few months of their pregnancy.
Morning sickness (that can happen any time of day or night, not just in the morning) can be another early sign of pregnancy. You may feel nauseous (sick), or you may actually be sick (vomit).
Generally feeling tired or run-down can be a sign too. Most pregnant women feel tired towards the end of the pregnancy though rather than in the first few months, but may feel a little more tired than usual at the start too.
Another common sign is sore or tender breasts. They may feel hard and sore to touch. They can also be tender at different times of your menstrual cycle though, so you may have experienced this feeling in the past.
If you are worried that you may be pregnant, you may like to do a pregnancy test for peace of mind. Tests are available in most chemists and supermarkets. If the test result is positive you will need to see a doctor who will do a blood test to confirm if you are pregnant, and if so, how far along you are.
All the best.
