Is it possible for your period to get postponed? Or because i bled will it come later?

Q.

I had sex for the first time, and i haven't got my period. The first time i bled a little, but the second time i did more.

So i haven't got my period yet... is it possible for your period to get postponed? Or because i bled will it come later? HELP! Am i pregnant?

A.

Hi there, thanks for your question. It sounds like you are really worried because your period hasn't come yet.

It's common for a young woman to bleed the first few times she has sex, so the bleeding you had is probably normal. I'm not sure from you question whether you have been have had your first period yet or not. If you have, the bleeding you had isn't in place of a period, so if your period is late and the sex you had was unprotected (no condoms) and you are not on any form of contraception, there is a chance you may be pregnant. You may like to do a home pregnancy test to see if you are pregnant. These are available from most supermarkets and pharmacies.

Also, it's not uncommon to have irregular or missed periods for reasons other than being pregnant, such as being stressed or run down.

If you have had unprotected sex, it's also a good idea to have a sexual health check up. This can be done by your doctor or at a youth health or sexual health clinic, such as Family Planning NZ (see link below). It can be as simple as a urine test and/or blood test and can work out if you have any sexually transmissible infections (STIs). The sooner you find these infections and have them treated the better.

Did you know that the legal age of consent (agreement) for sex in New Zealand is 16? Have a look at the Avert link below for more info. You should never feel forced into doing anything sexual you don't feel comfortable with. If a person forces you this it's called sexual assault and is a crime so make sure you tell an adult you trust.

All the best.
