I tried masturbating for the first time but it just hurt. Is this common? What can I do?

Q.

I tried masturbating for the first time a little bit ago but it just hurt at ejaculation, and then if I touched or stimulated my penis at all for the next couple minutes it would still hurt more.

Then I had this gas like pain in my bladder area for several minutes. I thought the gas part was coincidental, but I tried again a few days later and everything was the same. There wasn't any pleasure either time in the background I could feel.

Is this common? What can I do?

A.

Hi. It's good to ask questions when something has hurt.

Masturbation shouldn't hurt. Sometimes we can be too rough and only realise later that the skin or deep tissue is irritated and sore. Most people find after orgasm that they can feel over-sensitive and any touch can feel like a shock. After a few minutes this feeling fades.

Try using a lubricant so there isn't so much friction on the skin. Be aware that your penis is sensitive and some of the plumbing doesn't want too rough pressure. Men who masturbate by humping against something firm sometimes damage their urethra (the tube that carries the urine out through the penis).

There isn't likely to be a physical problem that you have. It's just that some men are more sensitive. Try being very gentle, stroking the shaft more than the knob of the penis. Make sure you have an empty bladder (it can feel uncomfortable if the bladder is pressing on plumbing that is pulsating).

If none of these suggestions help, consider seeing a doctor or youth health nurse for an examination. There are rare problems where something within the penis didn't develop correctly, and a doctor can check for this. But it's more likely that the discomfort will settle as you your technique gets better and you finish your growth to full adult size.

Good luck.
