To me, everything points to her being pregnant except for the tests...
Alrighty, this has been a frustrating thing because neither my girlfriend or I can stand to wait, so I'm sort of just looking for a little bit of professional input. She is on the pill but that is all the protection we use.
Since shortly after her period, a month ago, my girlfriend has been extremely nauseous but it's the worst in the morning and evening. Every time we get done with dinner she is literally gagging 5 minutes after. I started doing some research and it crossed my mind that she might be pregnant but I wanted to kind of keep some of the symptoms to myself because I didn't want to put and ideas in her head and make her think she was feeling a certain way when she really wasn't.
As things have progressed, she is still nauseous every night, some nights worse than others, and it's evolved into a thing where certain smells will make her sick and the thought of some foods turn her off too. She randomly had cramps a few days before her period was supposed to start and she had complained about bad heartburn and talked about how she had never had heartburn before. She did have what I guess you could call a partial period but it didn't start until today and it was supposed to start 3 days ago.
She'd taken two pregnancy tests when I started feeling suspicious about this but it was probably too early to detect anything. We took another one today and it came up negative but at this point I don't know what idea I should go with. To me, everything points to her being pregnant except for the tests but it worries me because if she isn't pregnant, something is medically wrong with her.
I've done so much research on this stuff that I feel like I could write a book about it. From what I've read, it looks to me like the time it takes to actually detect a pregnancy with urine tests can vary a lot from woman to woman because some begin to make hCG sooner than others. The other thing I found interesting is a lot of women saying they still had a period when they were pregnant and some saying they even had more than one.
I know no one can be certain of anything at this moment but I wanted to get some sort of answer or at least the thoughts from someone that might be able to make sense of all this. Thank you so much!
Hi. It's good that you and your girlfriend are being careful, using contraception and doing your own research and testing. You should be fine, but as you have found from your research, no type of contraception is 100% reliable. The contraceptive pill is 99% effective.
If this has been going on for over a month with your girlfriend being sick, a pregnancy test would be accurate now. By the time a woman's period is due, either a blood test or urine test should be accurate. Blood tests are accurate even earlier.
It's possible for a woman to fall pregnant on the pill but this is usually because we miss taking it or have diarrhoea (the runs) or vomiting so it isn't absorbed properly. If a woman misses a pill, or has vomiting or diarrhoea, she should use condoms for 7 days to be sure of not getting pregnant. The same goes for when women first start taking the pill. It needs a week to fully work, so condoms should be used as a back-up.
While you are right that some women have periods despite being pregnant, it is unusual. Hopefully by now you and your girlfriend do know and hopefully it's a false alarm and your girlfriend has just a stomach bug that dragged on. Good luck!
