Just wondering if you can give me any tips to be more confident at school.

Q.

Hey, just wondering if you can give me any tips to be more confident at school. I'm fine with my friends but if someone else talks to me my face goes bright red and i get sooo nervous. It really annoys me because a lot of people say i would be better to talk with if i wasn't as shy.

I really want to be able to talk to people in my class without getting so embarrassed! Please help!

A.

Hey, sorry to hear that you need a boost of confidence.

It's not unusual for you to feel this way. Almost everyone needs a boost in their self-confidence, yet few of us know how. Even fewer of us intentionally seek out ways to increase it.

Sounds like you care what other people think about you and don't want to look like a fool in front of other people. But you know what, they probably also feel the same way as you. So while YOU are trying not to look like a fool to them, THEY are trying not to look like a fool to you!

One way to help you control your nerves is to practice speaking in front of people. Maybe join a local Toastmasters club, where people will be happy to listen to you and give you feedback. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Try instead to relax, believe, enjoy and have fun with the activities. Having fun will help to keep you calm.

If you find your nerves really continuing to bother you, you may wish to seek professional advice. A doctor, speech therapist or psychologist can help you learn some techniques. Good luck!
